Pradaxa Side Effects

Thousands of patients suffer from atrial fibrillation, or an irregular heart rhythm. Many have been prescribed the drug Pradaxa to reduce the risk of stroke. Pradaxa is an anticoagulant. It acts by inhibiting thrombin, an enzyme in the blood that contributes to blood clotting and causes strokes. But, soon after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Pradaxa for the U.S. market in 2010, it said the drug caused serious uncontrollable bleeding in its users. A recent report by the Bloomberg news service quotes Pradaxa manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim saying the drug has been linked to 250 deaths worldwide.

Warning Signs of Internal Bleeding Caused by Pradaxa

Bleeding is a well-known complication of blood-thinning medications. It can lead to serious medical problems or even death. However, the FDA is investigating whether patients who take Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate mesylate) may suffer from uncontrollable internal bleeding more frequently than would be expected.

You are at a higher risk of suffering internal bleeding as a side effect of Pradaxa if you are 75 years old or older, have kidney problems, have a stomach ulcer or recurring intestinal bleeding, or take dronedarone (Multaq) or ketoconazole tablets (Nizoral).

If you take Pradaxa, you need to know the drug’s common side effects so you can recognize them immediately if they occur. Among the telltale signs of internal bleeding are:

  • Severe or uncontrollable bleeding
  • Frequent nose bleeds
  • Unusual bleeding from the gums
  • Menstrual or vaginal bleeding that is heavier than normal
  • Pink or brown urine
  • Red or black stools that look like tar
  • Bruises that happen without a known cause or that get larger
  • Coughing up blood
  • Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Unexpected pain, swelling, or joint pain
  • Headaches and feeling dizzy or weak.

If you have any of these symptoms of internal bleeding, contact your doctor immediately.

Other Complications of Pradaxa

Additional side effects of Pradaxa involve stomach upset, including:

  • Stomach pain
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Burning
  • Bloating.

Drug makers like Boehringer Ingelheim have an obligation to make sure the products they sell consumers are safe when taken as directed. It’s important for patients to recognize the side effects of Pradaxa and to understand their legal options if they have been harmed by an unsafe drug.
